The Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) was established in early 1986. The ISE is the only securities exchange in Turkey established to provide trading in equities, bonds and bills, revenue-sharing certificates, private sector bonds, foreign securities and real estate certificates as well as international securities.
Pursuant to the provisions of the Central Bank Law No: 1211, the Bank carries out money and credit policy in accordance with the needs of the economy and so as to maintain price stability. The Bank takes necessary measures to protect the domestic and international value of the national currency and regulates its volume and circulation. It also extends credits to banks and conducts open market operations in order to regulate money supply and liquidity in the economy.

Turkey was created in 1923 from the Turkish remnants of the Ottoman Empire. Soon thereafter the country instituted secular laws to replace traditional religious fiats. In 1945 Turkey joined the UN and in 1949 it became a member of NATO. Turkey occupied the northern portion of Cyprus in 1974 to prevent a Greek takeover of the island; relations between the two countries remain strained. Periodic military offensives against Kurdish terrorists have dislocated part of the population in southeast Turkey and have drawn international condemnation.
